Short history

Zavidovi?i is a town in central Bosnia and Herzegovina, located between Doboj and Zenica on the confluence of rivers Bosna and Krivaja (and Gostovi? nearby). It sits in a valley surronded by many mountins of which the largest is Klek. It is administratively part of the Zenica-Doboj Canton of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

In 1991 the municipality of Zavidovi?i had 57,159 inhabitants, of which there were 34,347 Bosniaks (61%), 11,637 Serbs (20%), 7,519 Croats (13%), 2,703 Yugoslavs (4.6%), and 953 others (1.4%). The town of Zavidovi?i itself had 14,820 residents.

Zavidovi?i was developed by the Austrians during the Austro-Hungarian reign in BiH, mostly because of the wood industry. After the World War II, the wood industry in Zavidovi?i, the company named by one of the rivers "KRIVAJA" (founded 1884), expanded. The company focused on furniture manufacturing, which it began to export to US under a name "KRIVAJA BEECHBROOK." Now, due to the Bosnian civil war (the so called "Bosnian war" (see Yugoslav wars)), the former giant and the town are left with almost nothing.
